This three-year doctoral position sits at the intersection of environmental monitoring, sensor technology, and climate solutions. You'll contribute to a collaborative research project aimed at advancing long-term surveillance systems for geological CO₂ storage—a critical technology for industrial decarbonization. The work addresses both technical reliability and social acceptance of onshore storage facilities through transparent, integrated monitoring approaches.

Responsibilities

• Select and integrate existing sensors meeting project specifications to develop a detection platform
• Conduct laboratory studies on sensor selectivity toward interfering gaseous species using multivariate analysis
• Define prediction algorithms accounting for reproducibility, drift, linearity, and variability in complex gas mixtures under variable environmental conditions (temperature, pressure, relative humidity)
• Investigate sensor aging effects on response and predictions, proposing compensation algorithms
• Execute field case studies at a volcanic site with variable CO₂ emission levels to test and validate developed sensor platforms
• Contribute to teaching activities as part of the doctoral mission
• Collaborate with consortium partners including research institutes and environmental agencies
• Prepare scientific communications and publications in French and English

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Master's degree (Bac+5 or equivalent) in measurement/instrumentation/metrology, data acquisition and analysis, or related field
• Strong knowledge in instrumentation, sensors, data processing, and multivariate analysis
• Solid numerical skills for data treatment, particularly Python coding
• Strong experimental aptitude and interest in hands-on research
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Preferred:

• Master 2 degree specifically in measurement/instrumentation/metrology or data acquisition/processing
• Internship or professional experience in research environments
• Knowledge in probability and statistics
• Junior candidates welcome
