Director of Development

PowerLines seeks an experienced Director of Development to lead fundraising and donor engagement strategy for our remote-based team. This full-time leadership role offers the opportunity to build and manage a comprehensive development function that drives organizational growth and impact from Washington, District of Columbia.

About the Role

As Director of Development, you will oversee all aspects of our fundraising operations, donor relations, and revenue development. You'll establish and execute a strategic vision that diversifies our funding base, strengthens relationships with institutional and individual supporters, and creates sustainable pathways for organizational growth. This role reports to senior leadership and partners closely with program teams to communicate impact and align funding with mission priorities.

Your Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with organizational goals
• Lead cultivation and stewardship of major donors, foundations, and institutional partners
• Manage the annual fund, grant programs, and planned giving initiatives
• Build and supervise the development team, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability
• Oversee donor database management, tracking, and reporting on key metrics
• Create compelling case statements, proposals, and donor communications that articulate organizational impact
• Identify and pursue new funding opportunities across sectors and geographies
• Monitor industry trends and competitive landscape to inform strategy

Requirements

• 7+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership capacity
• Proven track record of securing six and seven-figure gifts from diverse funding sources
• Strong understanding of major gifts, grants management, and annual fund operations
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to build relationships across stakeholders
• Demonstrated proficiency with donor management systems and fundraising databases
• Bachelor's degree required; relevant nonprofit, communications, or development background preferred
• Strategic thinking and ability to lead organizational change
• Remote-ready: self-directed, reliable technology setup, and strong collaboration skills
