Director, Government Relations

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential client in the sports commerce and entertainment sector. They seek an experienced Director of Government Relations to provide strategic leadership on legislative and regulatory matters affecting their growing retail, e-commerce, and consumer-facing operations across the United States.

This role reports to senior government relations leadership and works closely with the executive team to monitor policy developments, advocate for business interests, and build relationships with key government stakeholders at state and local levels.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain strategic relationships with Governors, State Attorneys General, and key state and local policymakers to advance organizational priorities
• Deliver executive-level legislative intelligence, including timely analyses of current and proposed legislation affecting retail, sports, sports betting, and e-commerce sectors
• Monitor the legislative and regulatory landscape, assess business impacts, and develop forward-thinking advocacy strategies
• Draft policy documents including executive summaries, position papers, and advocacy briefs that articulate policy positions to stakeholders
• Manage external consultants, coordinate with internal teams, and oversee special projects aligned with policy and business objectives
• Present policy positions to government officials, trade associations, coalitions, and industry stakeholders
• Strengthen partnerships with trade associations, advocacy groups, and community organizations
• Develop creative advocacy strategies that identify new opportunities in evolving regulatory environments
• Organize site visits, retail events, and media engagements for elected officials to showcase business operations and community impact

What We're Looking For

• 10+ years of state legislative, state executive government, or state government affairs experience, including demonstrated ability to work across the aisle
• Deep understanding of public policy with the ability to distill complex regulatory issues into actionable insights
• Extensive experience with and understanding of the legislative and regulatory process (required)
• Political campaign and electoral experience (highly valued)
• Exceptional writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills
• Proven ability to navigate complex policy challenges and influence diverse stakeholders
• Strategic and innovative problem-solving approach to advocacy
• Demonstrated success leading teams and managing projects from strategy through execution
• Self-starter with collaborative mindset and ability to work independently
• Passion for strategic communications and corporate narrative development

Pay

Pay via Get A Job.ai: $180,000–$215,000 USD base salary. Final compensation depends on location, experience, qualifications, and training. This represents base pay only and does not include potential short-term or long-term incentive compensation.
