Director, Employee Relations & Compliance, EMEA

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential legal technology organization in their search for a Director of Employee Relations & Compliance for EMEA. This is a senior, hands-on role based in London, owning complex ER casework, employment law compliance, and jurisdictional risk across Germany, the UK, Sweden, Italy, Spain, and France.

You'll be the first person in this role for the region, building dedicated ER capability where none exists today. Reporting to the EMEA People Director, you'll have a clear path to running an independent function as it scales.

Responsibilities

• Own complex ER casework end to end across all six markets: investigations, grievances, disciplinaries, performance improvement plans, and terminations for cause, maintaining consistently high, legally sound standards
• Serve as the escalation point when matters become complex, contested, or legally weighted for local People Advisory and the wider People organization
• Maintain rigorous case handling standards including written scoping, contemporaneous documentation, balance-of-probabilities findings, and independent review of employment-ending outcomes
• Own employment and ER compliance across all markets: statutory notice and consultation, works council and union engagement, mandatory filings, register-keeping, and local implementation of the EU Whistleblowing Directive
• Maintain the EMEA jurisdiction playbook and horizon-scan for legal changes, flagging implications to leadership proactively
• Build dedicated ER capability across EMEA, prioritized by risk and case volume
• Certify and calibrate anyone running formal ER processes to ensure consistency as the team grows
• Act as quality assurance for local People Advisory across EMEA, signing off on local ER and compliance work
• Partner with People Partners, People Operations, and other functions to ensure policy and tooling reflect EMEA market requirements
• Translate case patterns into regular, actionable insights for People leadership
• Collaborate with counterparts in other regions on shared case taxonomy, systems, and calibration standards

What We're Looking For

• Significant experience leading ER, HR compliance, or similar functions at a fast-scaling company, ideally across multiple EMEA jurisdictions
• Deep, practical knowledge of employment law and ER practice across several of these markets: Germany, UK, Sweden, Italy, Spain, France
• Comfort working outside your home jurisdiction and navigating different regulatory environments
• Proven track record of investigations, disciplinaries, and terminations that withstand scrutiny—demonstrating calm, neutral, thorough judgment under pressure
• Experience building an ER or compliance function from the ground up: establishing processes, hiring, and driving distributed teams to consistent standards
• Confidence as a senior, independent voice with ability to escalate to and influence leadership effectively
• Based in or willing to relocate to London
• Ability to travel across EMEA as needed
