Director, AIRx Medicinal Chemistry

Takeda seeks an accomplished Director of Medicinal Chemistry to lead the AIRx medicinal chemistry program in Boston, Massachusetts. This is a full-time position where you'll direct drug discovery strategy, build a high-performing chemistry team, and drive innovation in the design and development of novel therapeutic compounds.

About the Role

As Director of AIRx Medicinal Chemistry, you'll lead the scientific and strategic direction of medicinal chemistry operations at Takeda's Boston site. This leadership role combines hands-on chemistry expertise with program management and team development, overseeing initiatives that span compound design through candidate nomination. You'll partner with biology, pharmacology, and development colleagues to advance promising programs and translate scientific discovery into clinical reality.

Responsibilities

• Direct medicinal chemistry strategy, program planning, and portfolio execution across drug discovery initiatives
• Lead and develop a talented team of chemists and research scientists, fostering a culture of scientific rigor and innovation
• Oversee synthetic chemistry, structure-activity relationship studies, and compound optimization efforts
• Collaborate cross-functionally with biology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and regulatory teams to advance programs
• Establish and maintain laboratory best practices, safety standards, and regulatory compliance
• Drive innovation in chemistry methodologies and continuously improve research productivity and efficiency
• Communicate program progress, achievements, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership

What You Bring

• PhD or equivalent advanced degree in medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, or related discipline
• 10 or more years of experience in pharmaceutical drug discovery and development
• Demonstrated success leading chemistry teams and programs from inception through advancement
• Strong expertise in medicinal chemistry principles, synthetic approaches, and lead compound design
• Excellent project and people management skills with cross-functional leadership experience
• Strong communication and scientific presentation abilities
• Strategic mindset, scientific integrity, and commitment to innovation in drug discovery
