Counsel, Business Operations and Regulatory (Remote)

Cengage Group is seeking a Counsel, Business Operations and Regulatory to join our team in a full-time, remote position. You'll provide strategic legal counsel supporting business operations and regulatory compliance across our organization, based in the Edgewood, Richland County market.

About the Role

This in-house counsel position combines business law expertise with regulatory acumen. You'll serve as a trusted legal advisor on operational matters, ensuring the organization remains compliant with applicable regulations while advancing business objectives. Working remotely, you'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to navigate complex legal and regulatory landscapes in the educational technology and publishing sectors.

What You'll Do

• Advise business units and senior leadership on legal and regulatory risks related to operations
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and commercial agreements
• Develop and implement compliance frameworks and policies
• Conduct legal research and analysis on regulatory matters affecting the business
• Manage relationships with external counsel and regulatory agencies
• Support due diligence and corporate governance initiatives
• Stay current with regulatory developments in education, data privacy, and business law

What We're Looking For

• Juris Doctor degree and admission to the bar
• 5+ years of in-house or business law experience
• Demonstrated expertise in regulatory compliance or business operations law
• Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a remote environment
• Experience in educational technology, publishing, or related industries (preferred)
