Backend Software Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential sustainability-focused technology company that is building a brand-new engineering hub in London. As a foundational Backend Software Engineer, you will join a completely new team and help establish this hub from the ground up.

In this role, you will:

• Build and evolve backend services and infrastructure to support rapid growth and scale
• Develop new features for both consumer-facing and business partner applications
• Actively participate in agile development processes with a continuous improvement mindset
• Deliver high-quality, maintainable, and scalable products for an international user base
• Take on challenges outside your current boundaries to grow and expand your skills with team support

The technical environment includes a scalable Spring Boot application running on Java 25 in Kubernetes, deployed in a multi-region AWS setup. Developers enjoy a full local development environment for an excellent development experience.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

• Substantial experience in backend development within the Java ecosystem
• Proven production experience with Java, Spring Boot, MySQL, messaging systems, and Git
• Experience with Domain Driven Design and Clean or Hexagonal Architecture
• Knowledge of AWS services (SQS, SNS, S3), Elasticsearch, Redis, Docker, and Kubernetes
• Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs
• Demonstrated ability to build scalable solutions
• Strong collaborative skills and enjoyment working in cross-functional product teams
• Pride in writing quality, maintainable code
