Backend Engineer Intern | AI Systems (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a Berlin-based technology company building advanced AI analytics systems. Our client has developed a working prototype that analyzes how large language models represent brands, and they now need to scale that prototype into production-grade infrastructure.

This Backend Engineer Intern position focuses on building reliable AI systems at scale. You'll own the backend architecture that orchestrates queries across multiple AI platforms, processes responses, and transforms them into structured insights. While the primary focus is backend and AI systems (approximately 70-80% of the role), you'll also implement UI features from designer specifications and refactor existing frontend code.

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend architecture for AI analysis systems, including orchestration across multiple AI platforms, data pipelines, job scheduling, and storage solutions
• Develop AI workflows that perform reliably under production load with proper structure, testing, monitoring, and failure handling
• Implement security and infrastructure fundamentals including authentication, data handling, error management, and logging
• Use AI coding tools (Claude Code or similar) to accelerate development while maintaining full understanding of systems you deploy
• Build UI features from Figma designs and refactor portions of the existing frontend codebase
• Make independent technical decisions and clearly communicate your reasoning

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend fundamentals including APIs, databases, asynchronous processing, and system design
• Practical, hands-on experience building with LLMs or AI workflows—API integrations, structured outputs, multi-step pipelines, or evaluation systems. You must have actually built something; coursework alone is insufficient
• Familiarity with Next.js, TypeScript, Supabase, and Vercel, or comparable technologies
• Demonstrated ability to write secure, maintainable code designed for production use
• Effective use of AI coding tools to increase velocity while maintaining deep understanding of your own systems
• Fluent English communication skills
• Current enrollment at a university or vocational training program, with either: (1) a mandatory internship (Pflichtpraktikum) required by your program regulations, with enrollment certificate and proof of requirement, or (2) eligibility for a voluntary internship alongside studies (maximum 3 months)

Role Details

Duration: 3-6 months for mandatory internships, maximum 3 months for voluntary internships

Schedule: Full-time, 30-40 hours per week

Location: Berlin office preferred with 2+ days per week on-site; remote arrangements possible

Start date: As soon as possible
