Role Overview

As an Architectural Historian with Olsson, you'll be the expert voice connecting our clients' projects to their historical significance. Your research and analysis will inform preservation strategies, renovation planning, and adaptive reuse initiatives. Working across our multidisciplinary teams of designers and engineers, you'll ensure that historical context strengthens rather than constrains creative solutions.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Research and document the architectural history of buildings, districts, and landscapes relevant to client work
• Analyze architectural styles, materials, construction techniques, and periods to establish historical context
• Prepare detailed historical reports, narratives, and documentation for design teams and project stakeholders
• Advise on historic preservation standards, designations, and regulatory compliance
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, and planners to integrate historical findings into project strategy and design
• Examine archival records, photographs, property records, and primary sources to develop accurate historical narratives
• Support presentations and client discussions with historical expertise and research findings

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in architectural history, history, historic preservation, architecture, or related discipline
• Professional experience in architectural history research, documentation, or historic preservation
• Proficiency with archival research methods and primary source analysis
• Knowledge of United States architectural styles, movements, and historical periods
• Excellent written and oral communication abilities
• Capacity to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary professional teams
• Strong research, analytical, and attention-to-detail skills
• Ability to synthesize complex historical information for diverse audiences
