Software Engineering Manager

About This Opportunity

We are representing a rapidly scaling fintech organization that builds production-ready AI systems for the financial services sector. Our client has been recognized with multiple industry awards and is backed by leading investors. As they continue to expand across the UK, they need an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and develop one of their core engineering teams.

This is a people-first leadership role for someone genuinely excited about building high-performing, autonomous teams. You'll own team performance, culture, and growth while partnering closely with Product and technical leadership to deliver intelligent solutions that reshape how financial institutions operate.

Responsibilities

• Own the performance, development, and progression of your engineering team, setting high standards and providing honest, constructive feedback
• Build and maintain a self-organized team culture with high trust and genuine ownership, facilitating ceremonies with the goal of reducing dependency on management overhead
• Partner with Product teams on roadmap planning, ensuring engineers understand the context and business value behind their work
• Own team delivery, keeping engineers unblocked, priorities clear, and commitments met
• Identify patterns in team operations and design improved ways of working, including building automation to support those improvements
• Stay sufficiently close to the codebase to spot friction, improve developer tooling, and engage credibly in technical discussions without becoming a bottleneck
• Drive hiring alongside the recruitment function, contributing to interview process design and delivering a high-quality candidate experience
• Establish cultural expectations around AI coding tools, building team-wide norms for responsible, high-quality AI-assisted engineering

What We're Looking For

• Extensive experience in software engineering with genuine hands-on technical background—you know what quality code looks like and can engage in details when needed
• Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or Team Lead with real ownership of individual performance and team culture
• Track record of building high-trust, high-autonomy teams that succeed because of the environment you created, not constant oversight
• Strong understanding of Node.js or Python, and React—enough to have credible technical conversations, review code, and debug issues alongside your team
• Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and a proven ability to improve how teams deliver, not just follow processes
• Genuine enthusiasm for AI coding tools—you use them yourself, help your team use them effectively, and stay current on emerging capabilities
• Active interest in management and leadership challenges: growing people, unblocking teams, and building frameworks that make the team stronger
