Intern, System Architecture

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential quantum computing organization seeking a System Architecture Intern to join their optical architecture team in Daresbury. This is a 3–6 month internship focused on designing and modeling photonic systems that form the backbone of next-generation fault-tolerant quantum computers.

As an intern, you will:

• Contribute to ongoing optical architecture projects, including writing prototype software implementations for controlling and simulating optical networks inside photonic quantum computing systems
• Apply results from quantum information theory, network design, and optimization to improve optical architecture designs
• Support the development and discovery of new approaches to photonic quantum computation
• Simulate and benchmark different protocols to determine hardware system requirements
• Document and communicate technical results to cross-functional teams

What We're Looking For

Our client is seeking a fast-learning, productive, and creative individual who can translate theoretical concepts into real technology. The ideal candidate will have:

• A degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
• Currently studying or recently completed a postgraduate degree (PhD preferred)
• Experience programming in Python, C++, Julia, or similar languages
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work closely with others
• Competent use of collaborative software development tools (e.g., GitHub) is desirable
• Preferred: knowledge of quantum optics, photonic hardware, switch network design, optimization, or graph theory
