Robotics Software Engineer, Thunder

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential defense technology organization seeking a Robotics Software Engineer to join their London team. In this role, you will build mission-critical autonomy and systems integration software for advanced autonomous aircraft platforms operating in complex, real-world environments.

You will own complete feature development from conception through customer deployment, writing code that determines how autonomous systems coordinate, adapt to changing missions, and make decisions in unpredictable scenarios. Your work will span networking, autonomy, systems integration, and robotics, requiring pragmatic engineering trade-offs that prioritize mission success.

Key responsibilities include:

• Own end-to-end feature development and software solutions deployed to operational customers
• Write scalable code to improve products and expand mission capabilities
• Collaborate across hardware and software teams to plan, build, and test complex functionality
• Create and analyze metrics for debugging and monitoring distributed autonomous systems
• Triage issues, perform root cause analysis, and coordinate resolution steps
• Work directly with vehicle hardware teams and operational subject matter experts to align on requirements and iterate toward final designs
• Write and maintain core libraries and services for multi-agent coordination, including motion deconfliction and contingency management for fast-moving aerial vehicles
• Travel up to 20% to build, test, and deploy capabilities in field environments

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Strong engineering background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
• 2+ years of professional experience with C++ or Rust programming languages
• Experience building software solutions involving significant data processing and analysis
• Ability to quickly understand and navigate complex systems and established codebases
• Desire to work on critical software with real-world impact
• Bias for action, extreme ownership, and drive to see projects through from concept to production
• Eligible to obtain and maintain an active UKSV Security Clearance

Preferred qualifications:

• Strong background in Physics, Mathematics, and/or Motion Planning for modeling and simulation of physical systems
• Experience developing and testing multi-agent autonomous systems in real-world environments
• Feature and algorithm development with behavior trees
• Development of software/hardware for flight systems and safety-critical functionality
• Experience with distributed communication networks and message standards
• Knowledge of military systems and operational tactics
