Engineering Manager – Data Platform

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking an Engineering Manager to lead their Data Platform team. This is a fully remote position open to candidates in European, Middle Eastern, African, or American time zones.

Our client is building enterprise-grade data solutions spanning big data, NoSQL, caching, analytics, and SQL databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL. You'll lead engineering teams developing scalable data platforms for Kubernetes and cloud environments, writing primarily in Python while implementing modern operational practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team building scalable data solutions for Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure
• Hire, coach, mentor, and provide feedback to team members while leading by example
• Contribute code directly when needed, demonstrating strong engineering skills
• Set and manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
• Advocate for modern, agile software development practices
• Develop and evangelize excellent engineering and organizational practices
• Maintain a culture of quality and engineering excellence to ensure delivery of products users love
• Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture
• Participate actively on the leadership team and collaborate with other leaders
• Work remotely with global travel twice yearly for internal events

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Software engineering background, preferably with Python and Golang experience
• Experience running production systems at scale, preferably with Big Data or MySQL
• Excellent judgment about people—their motivations, abilities, developmental needs, and success potential
• Proven ability to build high-quality, open-source software
• Track record of driving strong engineering practices around performance and quality
• Open-minded attitude toward new technologies and drive to push boundaries
• Ambition to build products that improve how people operate software and infrastructure
• Passion for developing and growing people with demonstrated success
• Knowledge and passion for software development

Bonus qualifications:

• Specialist knowledge in Spark, Superset, MySQL, or similar technologies
• Prior experience working with open source and building products with community involvement
