Staff Data Scientist – Network

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential logistics technology client in their search for a Staff Data Scientist to anchor their Network forecasting function. This is a hands-on individual contributor role where you will own the most complex and ambiguous forecasting challenges that drive operational planning across sortation, transport, and last-mile delivery.

Our client operates at significant scale, moving thousands of parcels daily with every shift, route, and expansion decision downstream of the models you will build and maintain. As the technical anchor for Demand Forecasting, you will own the integrated forecast from live tracking signals through thirty-day model-generated predictions, the inbound international volume models, and the parcel size/weight predictions that translate counts into physical capacity requirements.

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end integrated demand forecast: blend real-time tracking data with model-generated predictions to deliver a single view by area from D0 to D30 that operational teams rely on for planning
• Build and maintain the hardest models in the portfolio: long-horizon forecasts beyond live data availability, inbound international volume prediction, and parcel dimension models
• Set methodology and validation standards across the Demand Forecasting area, defining how models are evaluated at different horizons and what constitutes model quality
• Define interfaces between forecasting systems and downstream consumers including demand management, routing, network planning, and finance teams
• Quantify the operational cost impact of forecast error and use this to prioritize modeling investments
• Work with a dedicated ML Engineer to ensure production quality: monitoring, drift detection, and root-cause analysis when accuracy degrades
• Review technical approaches, make build-vs-buy decisions, and mentor a Senior Data Scientist and Analyst without formal line management responsibility
• Learn operational processes deeply to identify where current approaches fall short and where models can create the most leverage

What We're Looking For

• At least 8 years in data science or quantitative modeling roles with clear evidence of models informing operational or commercial decisions at scale
• Track record as a technical anchor on modeling teams: owning the hardest problems, setting standards, and being the go-to for difficult technical decisions—all as a senior IC rather than through management
• Deep expertise across the full modeling lifecycle: data extraction, feature engineering, training, validation, and production deployment using Python and SQL
• Strong foundation in time-series forecasting spanning classical statistical methods, gradient boosting, and deep learning, with the judgment to select appropriate techniques for specific problems
• Systems thinking: you understand how forecasts connect to downstream planning decisions and design model interfaces deliberately
• Ability to evaluate models beyond standard offline metrics, connecting outputs to business KPIs and measuring real operational impact
• Strong communication skills with non-technical stakeholders, explaining model capabilities, limitations, and reliability without hiding behind technical complexity
• Comfort using AI tools (LLMs, code assistants) to accelerate workflows and curiosity about their application to the modeling process itself
• Experience in logistics or delivery networks is beneficial but not required; what matters more is the ability to quickly learn complex operational domains

Location and Work Arrangement
