Staff Software Engineer, Platform Infrastructure

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential data platform organization seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Platform Infrastructure team in London. Our client operates a sophisticated multi-cloud environment serving hundreds of enterprise customers, and they're investing heavily in the scalability and operational maturity of their foundational systems.

This is a highly technical role focused on building production platform systems at scale—not managing data pipelines, but creating the reliable infrastructure that everything else depends on. You'll design systems under load, reason carefully about failure modes, and build something solid that engineering teams can confidently build upon.

Responsibilities

• Own and develop platform infrastructure strategy with full technical accountability for outcomes
• Design and build distributed systems that handle real production load across multiple cloud providers
• Make principled build-versus-buy decisions and advocate for appropriate tooling choices
• Write both the strategy documents and the production code that implements them
• Create comprehensive internal documentation and decision records for platform systems
• Participate in architectural forums and drive technology choices across the engineering organization
• Operate and evolve a complex infrastructure estate spanning AWS, GCP, and Azure
• Ensure systems exhibit graceful degradation, proper backpressure handling, and resilience to failure cascades

What We're Looking For

Essential requirements:

• Deep distributed systems expertise grounded in production experience—you understand consistency and availability tradeoffs, failure cascades, and can diagram failure modes while making reasoned arguments about which matter in context
• Kubernetes at operator depth: you know what happens inside the scheduler and control loop when things fail because you've operated clusters under real load
• Strong Go proficiency with production systems delivered and strong opinions about what good Go looks like
• Multi-cloud architectural experience across AWS, GCP, and/or Azure—you've made considered decisions between cloud services and lived with those choices in production
• Track record defining requirements and driving technology choices across an engineering organization
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write design documents that change minds and postmortems that make organizations smarter
• Experience working effectively in globally-distributed teams

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience with storage primitives at the system level and informed opinions about relational versus object stores based on real failures
• Background working on SaaS or PaaS products across multiple cloud providers
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration systems

Pay

The estimated total compensation for this role ranges from £135,000 to £185,000, along with an equity component and comprehensive benefits package. Actual compensation will be based on your skills, experience, and qualifications.
