Staff AI Engineer – EU

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a Staff AI Engineer to lead the technical evolution of AI-powered research and conversational capabilities. You will shape architecture, deliver complex engineering initiatives, and establish the foundations that enable product teams to build reliable AI experiences at scale.

Your work will span the full lifecycle of AI systems—from experimenting with large language models and agentic architectures through to production deployment, evaluation, and operational excellence. You'll partner closely with product managers, software engineers, data scientists, and analytics teams to turn AI concepts into dependable customer-facing features.

Core responsibilities include:

• Defining technical direction for AI products that combine adaptive conversations, retrieval-augmented generation, and automated research synthesis
• Leading architectural decisions across generative AI applications, enterprise RAG systems, and machine learning infrastructure
• Taking ownership of ambiguous technical problems spanning multiple teams, from requirements through production delivery
• Designing and building production AI services using LLMs, vector search, tool use, and multi-agent systems
• Establishing evaluation frameworks for generative AI quality, covering accuracy, relevance, fairness, latency, and cost
• Guiding infrastructure decisions for ML services using Python, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS
• Building reusable patterns for retrieval quality, model orchestration, and working with structured and unstructured data
• Setting engineering standards for testing, observability, security, and deployment practices across AI systems
• Mentoring engineers and raising the technical effectiveness of teams around you
• Translating technical complexity into clear communication for both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

• Significant experience building and operating production machine learning or AI systems, with demonstrated technical leadership across teams
• Track record leading complex engineering initiatives from ambiguous requirements to measurable production outcomes
• Strong Python and software engineering skills with ability to contribute directly to production codebases
• Hands-on experience designing production services and APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI
• Practical experience building generative AI applications with large language models, RAG, tool use, or agentic systems
• Deep understanding of enterprise RAG architecture including retrieval design, chunking strategies, embeddings, reranking, and evaluation
• Experience defining evaluation approaches and using evidence to guide model and architecture decisions
• Familiarity with frameworks such as PyTorch, LangChain, LangGraph, or similar technologies
• Strong cloud infrastructure experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD practices
• Knowledge of AWS SageMaker, AWS Bedrock, or comparable managed ML services
• Experience with event-driven processing, vector databases, and ML lifecycle tools such as Kafka and MLflow
• Production observability and debugging expertise using tools like Datadog or OpenSearch
• Sound judgment balancing delivery speed, quality, reliability, scalability, security, and cost
• Ability to influence technical decisions and build alignment without formal authority
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving team effectiveness

Preferred experience:

• B2B SaaS product company background
• Building conversational AI, adaptive interviewing, or automated analysis systems
• Working with text, audio, or video in AI applications
• Evolving shared AI infrastructure or platforms serving multiple product teams
• Orchestration tools such as Airflow or Argo Workflows
• SQL, Spark, Snowflake, or other data processing technologies
• AI security, privacy, responsible AI practices, or safeguards against prompt injection and data leakage
• Materially improving latency, reliability, or cost of AI systems at scale

This role is remote within the UK, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, or the Netherlands. Staff-level seniority and individual contributor focus with broad influence.
