Lead Software Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential cryptography organization seeking a Lead Software Engineer to oversee cryptographic software IP development. In this role, you will manage the entire software development lifecycle—from design through testing and customer delivery—ensuring high-quality solutions across diverse environments.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Collaborating with engineering leaders and project managers to plan work allocation and deliver on product roadmaps
• Taking technical leadership for coordinating and delivering application and embedded software IP design projects from conception to customer delivery
• Line managing a software engineering team, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and fostering a positive work environment
• Ensuring your team has the necessary tooling and infrastructure to function effectively
• Mentoring colleagues and serving as the software design expert within the organization
• Reviewing verification and test plans with verification engineers
• Defining architectural solutions for complex algorithmic and system-level challenges
• Providing feedback on implementation feasibility and specification quality
• Coordinating closely with hardware engineers and security teams to enable their development work
• Engaging with customers during integration support and technical sales calls
• Ensuring clean lint and implementation reports for IP blocks and subsystems

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
• At least 10 years of experience in software design and/or verification
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proven ability to plan project development cycles and coordinate with project managers
• Commitment to high-quality engineering and advocating for optimal long-term solutions
• Self-starter capable of working with and inspiring teams
• Experience building software IP blocks from scratch through to customer delivery
• Expert-level C programming in embedded environments
• Ability to apply knowledge in unfamiliar situations and share expertise with others
• Experience specifying architectural solutions across multiple technical domains
• Understanding of cryptographic algorithms, protocols, and key management systems

Preferred qualifications:

• Familiarity with post-quantum cryptography standards and protocols (e.g., NIST PQC)
• Experience with Rust in embedded environments
• Previous software/hardware co-design experience
• Arm and RISC-V experience
• Knowledge of side-channel security countermeasures
• Experience with continuous integration and testing principles (GitLab CI or similar)
• Python programming proficiency
• Previous experience successfully managing cross-functional software teams

Location: UK, Netherlands, Spain, or Belgium. Occasional travel to offices will be required.
