Team Lead AI Engineering (f/m/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential logistics technology client seeking a Team Lead AI Engineering to own AI infrastructure and capabilities across their platform. In this role, you will lead a team of AI engineers, setting technical direction and delivering reliable, scalable AI systems in production.

You will tackle complex problems including structured data extraction from varied document types, building uncertainty estimation systems that flag items for human review when confidence is low, and automatically reconciling multiple document types against each other—all while meeting strict legal and compliance requirements. Clean benchmark metrics matter less here than robustness against real-world inputs nobody has seen before.

Your day-to-day will include:

• Leading and growing a team of AI engineers, providing both strategic technical direction and people leadership
• Owning MLOps processes and infrastructure to ensure AI systems are reliable, scalable, and secure
• Driving design and implementation of advanced AI features, partnering with engineering and product leadership to deploy machine learning models and data pipelines
• Setting quality standards for accuracy, efficiency, and uncertainty estimation through rigorous testing practices
• Ensuring scalability, maintainability, and core functionality of AI solutions while building new capabilities from scratch
• Translating customer needs into technical priorities and representing AI engineering in strategic product and sales discussions
• Establishing and evolving engineering standards, tooling, and quality practices across the team
• Coaching and developing team members to support their technical and professional growth
• Championing the use of modern AI tools such as Claude or Cursor across the organization

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 5+ years of experience in AI engineering with at least 1+ year in a leadership position, including end-to-end lifecycle management and MLOps
• Proven experience leading or managing a technical team with strong people-leadership skills
• Hands-on expertise in natural language processing and image processing
• Strong Python skills and experience with Azure; Terraform experience is a plus
• Passion for generative AI, OCR, and building customer-focused solutions
• Track record of writing clean, well-tested code with attention to post-deployment considerations
• Solid understanding of AI agents, tools, and their limitations
• Fluent English and German (C1 or above)
• Willingness to work from the Munich office at least two days per week
