Machine Learning Research Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential finance organization in their search for a Machine Learning Research Engineer to join their growing ML platform team in London. Our client operates in a fast-paced trading environment that serves as a unique testing ground for machine learning experimentation and innovation.

This role sits at the intersection of research and engineering. You'll contribute to critical infrastructure decisions, enhance research workflows, and help determine the right modeling approaches—whether neural networks, random forests, gradient-boosted trees, or ensemble methods—for specific challenges. Your work may involve scaling technology infrastructure, rapid prototyping of research concepts, or building versatile workflow APIs.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain training and inference infrastructure, taking machine learning concepts from experimentation through to production deployment
• Apply deep understanding of ML techniques and their mathematical foundations to guide technical decision-making across the platform
• Enhance research workflows to accelerate feedback cycles and improve experimentation velocity
• Bridge research and engineering functions, pushing forward model capabilities across the entire technology stack
• Create and maintain organized research codebases that produce robust, reproducible results while remaining user-friendly
• Evaluate and implement state-of-the-art approaches, staying current with academic research, emerging hardware, and new ML frameworks

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience building and maintaining ML training and inference infrastructure in production environments
• Strong mathematical background with enthusiasm for optimization theory, regularization techniques, and linear algebra
• Deep understanding of various modeling approaches and the mechanics behind different ML techniques
• Expertise with ML frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow, or similar technologies
• Track record of creating maintainable research codebases that balance rigor with ease of use
• Passion for keeping current with the state of the art through academic papers, hardware experimentation, and open-source exploration
• Inventive mindset with willingness to challenge existing approaches and tooling decisions
• Fluency in English required
