Backend Engineer, Home Page & Merchandising Platform

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential marketplace technology company seeking a Backend Engineer to join their London-based engineering organization. This is a hybrid role requiring approximately 3 days per week in their London office.

You'll join a multi-disciplinary engineering team building high-performance backend systems that power a real-time, hyper-local marketplace serving millions of users daily. This is an opportunity to work on complex technical challenges at genuine scale, contributing to platform reliability, architecture, and growth.

Responsibilities

• Design and scale backend services for real-time marketplace systems using languages such as Go, Ruby, or Python
• Participate in technical discussions and code reviews to improve code structure and architecture across the team's domain
• Enhance system reliability through monitoring, visibility improvements, and maintaining production system health
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify integration opportunities and influence technical roadmaps
• Support engineering growth by participating in hiring processes and conducting technical interviews
• Ship, test, and iterate on features quickly in a high-ownership, low-hierarchy environment

What We're Looking For

• Strong commitment to writing readable, well-designed, and well-tested software with long-term maintainability in mind
• Experience building web-based applications in modern languages such as Go, Ruby/Rails, Python, Scala, or Rust
• Solid understanding of relational databases including PostgreSQL or MySQL
• Familiarity with web architecture at scale, ideally in high-traffic environments handling 20,000+ requests per minute
• Exposure to NoSQL data backends or caching layers like Redis, DynamoDB, or ElasticSearch
• Problem-solving mindset, particularly when applied to complex logistical or marketplace challenges
• Ability to work on-site in London approximately 3 days per week
