(Senior) System Engineer (all genders) – Microsoft Infrastructure

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential public-sector IT organization seeking a System Engineer to join their Microsoft infrastructure team in Mainz. In this role, you will:

• Implement, operate, and continuously develop Microsoft infrastructure environments
• Install, configure, administer, and migrate IT systems within enterprise settings
• Analyze technical requirements and develop appropriate infrastructure solutions
• Execute changes, testing cycles, and troubleshooting activities
• Contribute to IT projects and take ownership of technical work packages
• Optimize existing infrastructure and support the introduction of new technologies
• Create and maintain technical documentation, concepts, and operational procedures
• Provide support during rollouts and ongoing operations
• Coordinate technical tasks and communicate with customers, teams, and stakeholders
• Ensure quality standards, thorough documentation, and sustainable operations
• For senior-level candidates: Design IT solutions and develop technical architectures

What We're Looking For

Our client is hiring across multiple experience levels—junior, mid-level, and senior. You don't need to meet every requirement listed; what matters is that your background aligns with one of these levels.

• Practical experience in Microsoft environments or comparable infrastructure technologies (Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, virtualization)
• Knowledge of automation and scripting, particularly PowerShell
• Familiarity with monitoring, backup, and high-availability concepts
• Experience with installation, configuration, administration, and operation of IT systems
• Interest in developing modern Microsoft infrastructures and solving challenging technical problems
• Understanding of IT processes, ideally ITIL framework
• Structured, solution-oriented work approach with ability to handle technical tasks independently
• Strong analytical skills and enthusiasm for resolving complex issues
• Experience creating technical concepts and documentation
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
• Very good German language skills and good English proficiency
• For senior candidates: Experience with complex IT projects, architecture work, consulting, or technical project management; ability to translate requirements into robust technical solutions and architectures
• Willingness to undergo security clearance (Sicherheitsüberprüfung SÜ2)
