Associate Director of Bioinformatics (Women’s Health and Organ Health)

About the Opportunity

We are representing a confidential biotechnology client seeking an Associate Director of Bioinformatics to lead a team focused on research and product development. In this role, you will manage a group of Bioinformatics Scientists, oversee the scientific strategy behind new diagnostic assays, and ensure seamless transition of research innovations into clinical production environments. You will work at the intersection of multi-omic sequencing technologies, assay optimization, and cross-functional product development in a regulated setting.

This is a remote position based in the USA.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of Bioinformatics Scientists, guiding their professional development and setting high standards for scientific rigor
• Own the research strategy for new product development, working with cross-functional stakeholders to define priorities and execution plans
• Direct bioinformatics analysis for assay development and optimization across multiple sequencing modalities, including short-read and long-read platforms, hybrid-capture and amplicon enrichment approaches
• Lead analysis of cell-free DNA features including methylation, fragmentomics, and other multi-omic signals
• Partner with laboratory teams on study design, technology assessment, and performance validation at the research and feasibility stages
• Guide improvements to analysis pipelines including variant detection, quality control, methylation calling, fragment-size analysis, error suppression, and structural-variant calling
• Transition research prototypes into stable production workflows, establishing software engineering best practices including version control, testing, CI/CD, and containerization
• Establish standards for AI-assisted work within the team, defining appropriate use cases and oversight requirements
• Serve as subject-matter expert for data science, molecular biology, pipeline engineering, biostatistics, quality assurance, and laboratory operations teams
• Communicate technical findings clearly to stakeholders at all levels of the organization

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Biostatistics, or related field (M.S. with equivalent experience may be considered)
• 7+ years of experience in bioinformatics, including 3+ years leading scientists and collaborating across functions
• Proven track record of leading a team that successfully transitioned scientific research into clinical diagnostic use
• Demonstrated experience developing or guiding diagnostic sequencing assays
• Deep expertise in next-generation sequencing analysis, including target enrichment designs, quality control, secondary analysis, and variant calling
• Experience with cell-free DNA sequencing and other omics data in a diagnostics context
• Working knowledge of diagnostic product development in regulated, accredited settings (CLIA environment preferred)
• Strong Python programming and data analysis skills
• Proficiency in exploratory data analysis and visualization of complex datasets
• Understanding of sequencing workflows from sample preparation through bioinformatics analysis
• Experience assessing new sequencing platforms or assay chemistries against established benchmarks
• Excellent communication skills for technical audiences and non-specialists alike
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives and timelines independently

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with multi-omic approaches such as methylation and fragmentomics analysis
• Long-read sequencing experience (PacBio HiFi, Oxford Nanopore) in addition to short-read (Illumina)
• Proficiency in R, shell scripting, or Java
• Cloud computing experience (AWS, GCP) and workflow orchestration tools (Snakemake, WDL, Nextflow, Cromwell)
• Containerization expertise (Docker, Kubernetes) for production-grade analyses
• Record of conference presentations or peer-reviewed publications
• Interest in working in a fast-paced, high-impact environment

Pay

Our client has indicated a compensation range of $166,600 to $202,000 USD for this role, based on experience, qualifications, and location. Final compensation packages may vary based on the specific candidate's skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and other factors unique to each individual.
