About This Opportunity
We are representing a leading French research institution in Brittany that is advancing the future of human-AI collaboration through innovative interactive systems. Our client is seeking a skilled Development Engineer to contribute to two groundbreaking national research projects exploring real-time multimodal interaction between groups of users and adaptive intelligent agents.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of virtual reality, generative AI, and human-computer interaction, developing systems that enable natural, effective collaboration between humans and intelligent systems in both therapeutic/educational and creative musical contexts.
Responsibilities
Core Development Across Both Projects:
- Design and develop real-time interaction loops between user groups and adaptive agents (virtual or generative)
- Implement acquisition, synchronization, and timestamping of heterogeneous multimodal data streams (audio, gestural, physiological for VR project; MIDI for musical project)
- Build logic for modeling an agent's "level of agency" or cooperation, driven by group interaction history
- Create mechanisms for conveying agent state to users through feedback, visualization, and sensory returns
- Contribute to producing multimodal datasets exploitable for scientific evaluation of collaboration
- Document all development work and participate in exchanges with multidisciplinary research teams
Virtual Reality Investigation Project:
- Develop multi-user virtual reality environment using Unreal Engine 5 with Metahumans integration for embodied virtual agents
- Implement distributed hardware architecture across 5 stations (4 participants + 1 expert) with network synchronization
- Integrate capture devices (eye-tracking, heart rate, electrodermal activity, audio) with simulation event timestamping
- Implement logic conditioning clue revelation by virtual agents based on detected multimodal participant behavior quality
Collaborative Musical AI Project:
- Design and develop real-time architecture to capture, analyze, and exploit musical interactions from a group of participants (MIDI-based initially, with potential for audio/gestural exploration)
- Develop adaptation mechanisms for the AI musical partner to evolve its behavior between imitation, accompaniment, and deliberate perturbation
- Design and implement interaction scenarios to experiment with different forms of collaboration and agency negotiation between users and AI for scientific data collection
- Ensure musical experience fluidity by optimizing synchronization, system reactivity, and latency management
- Explore sound, visual, or gestural modalities with researchers to make AI state and intentions perceptible and support non-verbal communication between participants
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Engineering degree or Master's degree in computer science, AI, computer graphics, or signal processing
- Strong real-time development experience: solid C++ and/or C# programming skills; design of interactive systems with latency constraints
- Multimodal signal processing: acquisition and synchronization of heterogeneous streams (physiological, gestural, audio); signal processing fundamentals
- Autonomy and ability to work with multidisciplinary research teams (cognitive science, HCI, psychology)
- Rigorous documentation practices
- French language proficiency required for this position in France
Highly Desired Skills:
- 3D/VR development: Unreal Engine 5, ideally with Metahumans; Unity or Godot; multi-user networking in immersive environments
- MIDI/music processing: Real-time MIDI stream handling (e.g., JUCE, Max/MSP, RtMidi); understanding of AI-based music generation (note: no audio signal processing required)
- Prior experience in at least one domain (VR/Unreal Engine or MIDI workflows) is a strong asset; the other can be developed in role
Appreciated Skills:
- AI/adaptive models: familiarity with adaptive agents, generative models, or online learning
- Interest in human-AI collaboration and social interaction research
