Staff Software Engineer — Java / Spring Platform

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential hospitality technology organization seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the architecture and evolution of their core Java/Spring platform. This system processes millions of rate decisions daily across a large multi-tenant environment, and you'll drive its modernization and technical direction.

In this role, you will:

• Own the architecture and technical roadmap of a high-throughput Java/Spring platform, driving domain decomposition, defining service boundaries, and leading modernization initiatives that improve modularity, reliability, and developer experience at scale
• Design and build event-driven data flows using AWS Kinesis, SQS/SNS, and Spring Cloud Stream processing framework, improving GraphQL API layers and backend services powering complex pricing and inventory systems
• Operate and tune MongoDB, Redis, and PostgreSQL for performance and reliability in a multi-tenant environment, strengthening platform observability through OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, and Sentry instrumentation
• Pioneer AI-augmented engineering workflows using modern AI coding tools and platforms, setting standards for how AI-assisted development works across globally distributed engineering teams
• Drive architecture decisions through design docs and RFCs, establishing patterns for schema evolution, contract testing, and observability across the platform
• Mentor engineers across US and EU teams, raising the bar for code quality, system design, and technical standards in a globally distributed organization

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 7+ years building production backend systems at scale
• Deep expertise in Java, Spring Framework, Gradle, and JVM performance tuning
• Production experience with event-driven architectures using AWS Kinesis, Kafka, or equivalent streaming platforms
• Strong system design fundamentals including domain decomposition, modularity, and schema evolution
• AWS production experience across EKS/ECS, S3, SQS/SNS, and IAM
• Demonstrated track record of driving architecture decisions and authoring design documents without formal authority

Preferred qualifications:

• Working proficiency in Python for tooling, automation, or data workflows
• Experience with MongoDB at scale, including indexing, aggregation pipelines, and sharding
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development, including LLM coding agents, prompt engineering, or related tooling
• Experience evolving large monoliths toward modular or service-oriented architectures
• Familiarity with hospitality domain systems
