Principal Data Strategist (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology consultancy seeking a Principal Data Strategist to join their German operations. This is a senior, client-facing leadership role where you will develop data strategies that unlock business value for enterprise clients across multiple industries. You'll work with a small, senior team and grow capability through technical excellence and thought leadership rather than managing a large inherited organization.

The position is based in Germany (Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, or Stuttgart) and requires regular travel to client sites, approximately 50% of your time.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with clients to understand their business ecosystem and co-create data and technology strategies aligned with their objectives
• Define clear visions for enterprises to become data-driven and aligned with overall business strategy
• Provide technical leadership and guidance on complex data programs as a subject-matter expert
• Lead client interactions across various domains, addressing challenging problems and collaborating on viable solutions and winning proposals
• Communicate data strategy to senior client stakeholders, including C-level executives, acting as a translator between business, data, and IT
• Own the creation of end-to-end viable data solutions with long-term impact in mind
• Formulate data governance strategies addressing security, privacy, and compliance requirements
• Build capability in data strategy and governance, mentoring the next generation of data strategists
• Create differentiated market-ready assets in data strategy and governance
• Lead through influence, growing capability and raising delivery standards while building market presence through thought leadership

What We're Looking For

Technical Skills

• Extensive consulting experience with a proven track record of creating data strategies and solutions that drive business value
• Solid experience with data platforms and technologies, able to provide advisory and consultative guidance
• Experience engaging with C-level stakeholders to influence and enable enterprise-wide data strategy operationalization
• Demonstrated leadership abilities with capacity to lead technical teams and drive projects to successful completion
• Track record ensuring proper data governance policies, including data lineage, quality checks, and classification
• Experience with AI and ML use cases and landscapes, able to influence the build of solutions that harness insights from data
• Experience building high-level solution frameworks, leveraging paradigms such as data-as-a-product and federated governance
• Professional working proficiency in German (B2 minimum, C1 strongly preferred) with ability to build consensus with technical stakeholders

Consulting and Commercial Track Record

• Recent consultancy or professional-services experience (within the last five years) driving data and AI engagements end to end
• Demonstrable success helping win and shape data and AI pursuits within the last three to five years, including deals from around €3M upwards
• Experience growing a practice, capability, or go-to-market asset with tangible business outcomes
• Hands-on technical credibility in at least one relevant area while leading primarily on strategy and advisory
• Significant hands-on and leadership experience in data and AI (typically 10+ years) with appetite to keep building and growing accounts, teams, and capability

• Strong stakeholder management skills with ability to liaise between clients and key stakeholders, ensuring buy-in and gaining trust
• Resilience in ambiguous situations with ability to adapt and approach challenges from multiple perspectives
• Skill in managing risks and conflicts effectively
• Experience coaching, mentoring, and motivating others to take positive action and accountability
• Ability to influence others and advocate for technical excellence while remaining open to change
• Natural partnership-building skills with understanding of how relationship building creates business opportunities
