Automation Engineer

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential food manufacturing organization in their search for an Automation Engineer. This is an on-site role based in Ashby de la Zouch, working Monday through Friday with some flexibility required to support operations.

This hands-on position offers the chance to lead automation systems support and improvement initiatives across a modern production facility. You'll work collaboratively with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Technical teams to deliver automation solutions that drive operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation and PLC support across the facility, developing fault-finding capability across all shifts
• Address automation challenges including obsolescence upgrades and capital project delivery
• Collaborate with site teams, suppliers, and contractors to deliver automation projects from concept through completion
• Establish and maintain automation standards, training programs, and coaching initiatives to ensure safe systems and consistent processes
• Support both site-driven and centrally driven engineering projects through cross-functional teamwork
• Participate in 24/7 emergency cover rotation to ensure automation system availability and safety
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives aligned with established work systems and initiative management principles
• Ensure full compliance with Health and Safety, Environmental, and Hygiene policies with emphasis on safe working practices
• Manage automation documentation, contracts, and warranties to ensure systems meet organizational standards

What We're Looking For

Education and Background:

• HNC or higher in an engineering discipline, or time-served apprenticeship with strong practical experience
• Background in automation engineering
• Solid foundation in electrical engineering and control systems

Technical Experience:

• Siemens PLC systems (essential)
• TIA Portal (desirable)
• Experience with other PLC platforms such as GX Works, CX Programmer, or Rockwell Automation
• Familiarity with MES platforms and data collection systems
• Knowledge of operational technology and energy management systems

Project and Continuous Improvement Experience:

• Proven ability to provide hands-on coaching and development to teams in automation engineering (essential)
• Demonstrated experience in project engineering and management
• Involvement in maintenance and continuous improvement programs
• Understanding of quality management systems and legislative/food safety compliance
• Comfortable with budgeting, CapEx processes, and procurement activities
