About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential aerospace technology client seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer I to join their Cambridge, UK team. Our client develops cutting-edge communication systems for satellites and aerospace platforms in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.

This is a hands-on role where you'll lead mechanical design efforts from concept through qualification, working on hardware that operates in some of the most demanding environments imaginable. You'll serve as both a technical leader and mentor, driving design excellence while developing junior engineers on the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of aerospace products through all development phases: concept, requirements definition, detailed design, simulation, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and operational support
  • Design electronics packaging with expertise in thermal management, precision machining principles, and environmental qualification
  • Perform thermal simulation and analysis, shock and vibration simulation, and finite element analysis (FEA) to validate and optimize designs
  • Apply electromagnetic interference/compatibility (EMI/EMC) mitigation techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles
  • Collaborate closely with electrical engineers on printed circuit board assemblies and overall system integration
  • Present engineering design reviews to customers and executive stakeholders
  • Contribute to proposal-writing efforts with clear technical documentation
  • Mentor and develop junior mechanical engineers, serving as a technical authority in your field
  • Conduct cost analysis to inform design decisions and manufacturing approaches

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university
  • 9+ years of industry experience in design and analysis of electronics packaging, including thermal, vibration, and stress dynamics hand calculations and simulations
  • Expertise in aerospace and space industry design, development, and qualification processes
  • Expert-level proficiency with electronics assemblies and proven experience collaborating with electrical engineers on PCBAs and CCAs
  • Expert-level proficiency with professional mechanical CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and FEA tools (Ansys preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with CNC manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability
  • Demonstrated experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques in aerospace applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical presentations and documentation
  • Ability to meet security and export control requirements, which may consider nationality, dual nationalities, place of birth, and country of residence
