Interim Staff Systems Engineer – IT & Infrastructure (d/f/m)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech client in Berlin seeking an Interim Staff Systems Engineer to join their IT & Infrastructure team on a freelance basis. This is a critical technical leadership role responsible for maintaining enterprise cloud infrastructure, identity management systems, and core application platforms that serve hundreds of internal users.

Our talent team is looking for an experienced systems engineer who can architect reliable, secure infrastructure while collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders. You'll serve as the technical escalation point for complex cloud and application issues, ensuring enterprise systems remain stable, compliant, and optimized for a growing hybrid workforce.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and operate enterprise cloud infrastructure with a focus on high availability, performance, and security
• Lead identity management initiatives across the organization, including platform management and Okta administration, developing scalable governance processes
• Support integration of new tools and systems, owning technical evaluation, onboarding, and end-to-end configuration
• Ensure enterprise systems remain current with security patches, configurations, and compliance standards consistently applied
• Maintain security backups and redundancies, proactively identifying and closing infrastructure gaps
• Manage and improve network, device management systems, and maintain stability for a modern, hybrid workforce
• Develop automations, AI-powered solutions, and scripts to reduce manual work and improve infrastructure efficiency
• Provide third-level support for cloud applications as the deepest technical escalation point
• Collaborate with SRE and platform engineering teams to assess risk, develop guardrails, and resolve incidents
• Own performance tuning of application stacks, including messaging between applications, load management, and components such as Apache and Ruby

What We're Looking For

• Strong hands-on experience in enterprise cloud administration, ideally with GCP, including designing and scaling production cloud environments
• Solid practical experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and virtualization technologies such as Docker and VMware
• Deep networking knowledge with TCP/IP and related protocols, capable of diagnosing and resolving complex network issues
• Experience implementing network security best practices and governance, ensuring access controls and policies are consistently applied
• Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language such as Python or shell for infrastructure automation
• Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting Google Workspace and Linux environments
• Experience setting up and improving monitoring and visualization systems for better observability and incident response
• Background in engineering or computer science is a plus; structured thinking and hands-on systems experience are essential
• Based in or able to work from Berlin
