Engineering Manager – Java

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a talented Java development team in Bordeaux. In this role, you will balance hands-on technical leadership with people management, driving both code quality and team growth.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Taking ownership of user stories, conducting thorough code reviews, and actively contributing to design, development, testing, and production deployments
• Developing technical roadmaps and coordinating delivery across cross-functional teams including product, design, and engineering stakeholders
• Managing and mentoring a team of 4-5 developers through one-on-ones, performance reviews, and career development conversations
• Establishing and championing engineering best practices in clean code, testing methodologies, and pair programming
• Removing technical blockers, making architectural decisions, and ensuring the team delivers on commitments with high velocity and quality
• Leading successful onboarding processes and contributing to recruitment efforts to grow the team with top talent
• Fostering team cohesion and motivation across distributed locations
• Participating in the adoption of AI technologies within both product development and internal engineering practices

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate brings a strong blend of technical expertise and leadership experience:

Required Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of Java development experience with recent versions of the language
• At least 2 years in a team lead or similar management role, with proven success mentoring developers
• Demonstrated ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with people management responsibilities
• Track record of delivering complex projects in microservices environments
• Professional proficiency in English

Technical Skills:

• Strong Java development and architecture expertise
• Experience with Spring Framework
• SQL database knowledge
• Cloud platforms experience
• Microservices architecture understanding

Location: This position is based in Bordeaux with one day of remote work per week.
