Major Gifts Officer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading non-profit organization focused on technology advocacy and digital rights. Our client is building out their major gifts program and needs someone who can do more than manage a portfolio—they need a fundraiser who personally closes transformational gifts and moves donors from interest to commitment.

As Major Gifts Officer, you'll own relationships with donors capable of giving $50,000 to $1M+, translating complex programmatic work into compelling cases for support that result in signed commitments. This isn't about perpetually "warming up" prospects—it's about systematic cultivation that leads to closed revenue.

Responsibilities

In your first six months, you will:

• Get up to speed on the existing major gift portfolio and pipeline in Salesforce, building relationships with current donors
• Move active prospects toward solicitation rather than leaving them in cultivation
• Partner with prospect research to identify and qualify new major gift prospects
• Plan and deliver stewardship touchpoints or donor events that deepen existing relationships
• Shape tailored proposals and impact stories drawing on program and executive staff input

As you grow into the role, you will:

• Personally solicit and close five-, six-, and seven-figure gifts from high-net-worth individuals
• Help the major gifts program consistently hit revenue targets through disciplined moves management
• Manage a portfolio of major donor relationships, systematically advancing prospects through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
• Document every meaningful donor interaction in Salesforce so relationship history is accurate and next steps are clear
• Design stewardship activities and donor events that keep major donors genuinely engaged after their gift
• Build a growing base of donors who renew and increase support over time
• Keep the pipeline growing faster than it depletes, ensuring future revenue isn't riding on today's named relationships alone
• Translate technical programs into compelling, tailored proposals that move donors to give
• Deploy executive leadership and program staff toward the right donor relationships at the right moments

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Track record in major gift fundraising, preferably in technology, advocacy, or public interest organizations
• Demonstrated success personally soliciting and closing five-, six-, and/or seven-figure gifts directly with high-net-worth individuals—not just managing portfolios someone else built
• Ability to conceive, plan, and execute a major gifts program while systematically managing donor relationships from identification through stewardship
• Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills with credibility to earn trust in values-driven environments
• Ability to translate complex technical concepts into compelling philanthropic opportunities
• Strong proposal writing and presentation skills
• Command of donor cultivation strategy and moves management
• Comfort with CRM systems and disciplined database management
• Focus to manage a full portfolio while prioritizing what matters most
• Initiative to move toward hard conversations—including the ask—rather than waiting for others to go first

Preferred experience:

• Understanding of digital rights, internet health, or technology policy
• Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) fluency and comfort discussing DAF giving opportunities
• Experience with data-informed prospecting, wealth screening, or predictive analytics tools
• Awareness of planned and bequest giving as part of the philanthropic landscape

Pay

This role will be hired at either Level 17 or Level 18 based on the depth and breadth of major gifts experience and the scope and complexity of work you have led. Compensation is market-based and varies by location:

Level 17:

• Germany: €79,920 – €89,846
• UK: £66,226 – £74,450
• Canada: $137,970 – $155,104 CAD
• US (standard): $102,200 – $114,892 USD
• California, Washington, Massachusetts, Maryland/DC: $122,640 – $137,871 USD
• NYC, San Francisco Bay Area: $127,750 – $143,615 USD
• London: £82,782 – £93,063
