Founding Research Engineer or Research Scientist

About This Opportunity

Our client is a confidential AI research organization focused on building specialized systems for high-stakes professional domains. We are representing them in their search for a Founding Research Engineer or Research Scientist to join their team in Munich.

This is a ground-floor opportunity to work on novel approaches to model adaptation, agent design, and domain-specific AI systems. You'll collaborate directly with academic researchers, domain experts, and enterprise partners to develop methods that bridge cutting-edge machine learning research with real-world deployment.

Responsibilities

• Develop and evaluate methods for adapting language models and agent systems to specialized domain tasks
• Design benchmarks and evaluation frameworks for complex professional capabilities
• Build data curation pipelines that scale from evaluation to training scenarios
• Create infrastructure for training, inference, experimentation, and systematic evaluation
• Collaborate with domain experts to translate professional workflows into agentic systems
• Transform successful research prototypes into production-ready capabilities
• Own experiments end-to-end, from initial hypothesis through implementation to analysis
• Contribute to the organization's technical direction and research culture as an early team member

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Master's degree or PhD in machine learning, computer science, mathematics, or related field—or equivalent research or industry experience
• Either a strong machine learning research track record or significant experience building large-scale ML systems
• Hands-on experience training and evaluating language models or building agentic systems
• Self-directed approach to technically ambiguous problems
• Interest in understanding domain-specific work practices and collaborating with subject matter experts

Particularly valuable experience (not all required):

• LLM post-training, fine-tuning, or reinforcement learning from human feedback
• Data curation, synthetic data generation, or human-in-the-loop pipelines
• Evaluation harness and benchmark development
• Distributed training, inference optimization, or experiment infrastructure
• Publications, open-source contributions, or deployed research systems
• Applied AI in specialized professional or expert-intensive domains

Work arrangement: Full-time position based in Munich, with at least one day per week in-office. Our client values in-person collaboration and prefers candidates based near their Munich location.
