About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential sustainability technology organization based in Berlin that builds AI-powered solutions for the global climate economy. Our client works with major multinational corporations and climate organizations to automate sustainability data workflows at enormous scale.

This Backend/AI Product Engineer role offers high ownership in a small, impactful team. You'll build production systems that directly support sustainability workflows for thousands of organizations worldwide. This position combines strong backend engineering with applied AI/LLM work and genuine product ownership—you'll take features from user discovery through technical implementation to production deployment.

Responsibilities

• Own product features end-to-end, from understanding user problems and defining technical approaches through delivery, measurement, and continuous improvement
• Design and build scalable backend systems including APIs, data models, workflows, and infrastructure for complex enterprise products
• Build and ship applied AI/LLM features such as RAG systems, tool-using agents, structured-output pipelines, and evaluation workflows
• Create reusable, extensible platform building blocks that support multiple user journeys rather than solving problems in isolation
• Improve system robustness by strengthening reliability, testing, observability, performance, and maintainability as the platform scales
• Work directly with users and product data, using qualitative feedback to understand real problems and evaluate solution effectiveness
• Prototype and test new AI capabilities, turning promising ideas into practical product improvements
• Collaborate closely with other engineers through pair programming, technical design discussions, and shared problem-solving

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Strong professional backend engineering experience with a track record of designing and shipping reliable production systems
• Experience in small, high-ownership product teams, ideally within startup or scale-up engineering organizations of roughly 5–20 engineers
• Evidence of shipping meaningful products end-to-end rather than owning only narrow components in larger organizations
• Strong experience in Python (or another modern backend language like Java, Ruby, or TypeScript, with willingness to become productive in Python quickly)
• Strong API, database, and systems design skills with ability to model complex workflows and build maintainable foundations
• Applied AI/LLM experience or strong interest, ideally involving RAG, retrieval, tool use, agents, structured outputs, or evaluation systems
• Solid software-quality mindset including testing, code review, CI/CD, observability, and pragmatic reliability approaches
• Cloud and container experience with understanding of deploying, operating, and scaling production workloads
• Fluent English (C1+), written and spoken
• Submission of a short intro video (max 2 minutes) as part of your application

Nice to Have:

• Experience building workflow, reporting, questionnaire, or other complex B2B SaaS products
• Familiarity with FastAPI, PostgreSQL, background queues, or LLM frameworks
• Deeper experience with RAG, retrieval, agents, LLM evaluation, and production AI systems
• Experience improving latency, cost, and reliability for AI workloads
• Knowledge of ESG, sustainability, climate tech, or corporate reporting
• German language skills
