Senior Software Engineer- Python

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential energy technology organization based in Manchester. They are transforming how renewable energy is traded and optimized across European markets, and they need a Senior Software Engineer with strong Python expertise to help build and scale their asset-backed trading platform.

This is production software with real commercial impact—supporting trader workflows and driving physical dispatch decisions for portfolios of batteries, solar, and wind assets across multiple countries. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering and energy systems, turning complex domain requirements into reliable, well-tested services.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate Python backend services within an event-driven architecture
• Own data flows from ingestion through optimization to dispatch, using queues, lambdas, and API integrations
• Productionize algorithms developed by data scientists, ensuring prototypes become reliable production services
• Contribute to infrastructure as code using CDK or CloudFormation
• Improve system reliability, latency, and observability through testing, monitoring, and thoughtful refactoring
• Participate in architectural decisions as the platform expands to new markets and asset types
• Support teammates through pairing, code reviews, and collaborative problem-solving
• Maintain high standards for typed, tested Python code where correctness is critical

What We're Looking For

Core Skills:

• Strong production Python experience with a focus on backend services
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3)
• API design and domain modeling for complex business workflows
• Commitment to robust, typed, well-tested code (pytest, mypy, CI/CD)
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with both engineers and domain specialists
• Sound judgment in ambiguous situations with ability to make explicit trade-offs

Particularly Valuable:

• Experience with event-driven or serverless architectures at scale
• Infrastructure as Code expertise (CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform)
• Familiarity with Pydantic, strict typing, and mypy
• Production observability experience (CloudWatch, Grafana)
• Background in optimization, modeling, or constraint-heavy domains
• Monorepo experience with shared libraries and multiple deployable services

You do not need prior energy sector experience—curiosity and willingness to learn from traders and data scientists matters more than domain expertise.

Technology Environment: Python 3.13, AWS serverless stack, pytest, mypy, Pydantic, AWS CDK (TypeScript), Databricks, Jupyter notebooks
