Software Engineer, Backend (BI Platform) 

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology organization in their search for a Software Engineer, Backend (BI Platform) to join their team in London. Our client operates a sophisticated business intelligence infrastructure serving thousands of data practitioners across multiple regions and brands.

In this role, you will build and operate the backend services, APIs, and infrastructure that power enterprise BI platforms. This is hands-on platform engineering: you'll own services and integrations, identity and access automation, observability, reliability, and developer experience. The domain is business intelligence, but the challenges are backend and platform engineering problems at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate backend services, APIs, and automation that support enterprise BI platforms used across multiple business units
• Automate the platform lifecycle end-to-end including provisioning, metadata management, permissions, migrations, archival, and validation to eliminate manual administration
• Build integrations between BI platforms and the broader data ecosystem: warehouses, identity providers, orchestration systems, CI/CD pipelines, and internal developer tooling
• Improve availability, observability, performance, scalability, and security of systems you own, and carry operational responsibility for production services
• Leverage AI tooling as part of your engineering workflow, and where appropriate, build LLM-backed capabilities held to the same reliability and governance standards as all production systems
• Raise the engineering bar through service design, code review, testing, CI/CD practices, and documentation while improving developer experience for platform users

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production backend, platform, or infrastructure systems
• Strong proficiency writing readable, maintainable, well-tested code in Python, plus comfort with SQL and working understanding of data modelling and warehousing concepts
• Experience building and owning APIs, integrations, or automation in production, with sound judgement on service boundaries, authentication, data contracts, and failure modes
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD, containers and Kubernetes, observability, debugging, and incident response; you operate what you build
• Practical experience using AI tools (LLMs, agentic workflows, AI-assisted development) as part of your engineering practice, with judgement about where they add value
• End-to-end ownership of ambiguous problems, clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and comfort self-organizing in fast-paced, distributed environments

Nice to have:

• Experience owning or integrating with BI platforms such as Looker, Sigma, or comparable tools; familiarity with semantic layers such as LookML or dbt
• Experience automating identity and access through Okta, SCIM, or role-based access controls; building multi-tenant platforms across brands and regions
• Experience shipping LLM-backed features to production users (retrieval, grounding, evaluation), or working with MCP, agent frameworks, or tool-calling in production
