About This Opportunity

Our talent team at Get A Job.ai is representing a confidential e-commerce technology organization in Germany. We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join their Data Platform team, working remotely or from offices in Köln, Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, or Berlin.

This role sits at the intersection of infrastructure operations and data engineering, supporting critical data pipelines that process thousands of daily tasks. You will work alongside senior data engineers in a low-process, Kanban-driven environment where autonomy and technical ownership are paramount.

Responsibilities

  • Run and own a self-hosted Apache Kafka backbone and Schema Registry end-to-end, managing ACLs, client quotas, certificates, upgrades, and disaster recovery
  • Operate change data capture pipelines built on Debezium, overseeing connectors, snapshots, offsets, replica lag, and data warehouse sink loaders
  • Manage workloads on Kubernetes, including a custom workflow orchestrator executing approximately 7,500 SQL and Python tasks daily, owning resource management, autoscaling, and debugging
  • Automate access management and maintain infrastructure as code across self-hosted GitLab CI/CD pipelines, replacing manual ticket workflows with code-driven policies
  • Own observability and infrastructure costs, including monitoring across Kafka and sink loaders, Slack-native alerting, and maintaining transparency on resource expenses
  • Carry triage rotation responsibilities approximately one week in three, handling ingestion and access requests, schema alerts, and supporting analysts while driving automation initiatives
  • Act as a senior technical partner driving design reviews and multi-quarter initiatives, with opportunities to expand into data warehouse architecture including access frameworks, partitioning strategies, and data modeling
  • Optional participation in 24/7 on-call rotation

What We're Looking For

  • Several years of production infrastructure operations experience with personal accountability, including on-call rotation. You can articulate specific incidents, root causes, permanent fixes, and concrete trade-offs you've navigated with supporting metrics
  • Deep hands-on expertise in Apache Kafka broker operations, including cluster sizing, partition rebalancing, replication, ISR behavior, and version upgrades
  • Production experience operating cross-system data replication, ideally using Debezium on Kafka Connect, or database replication via binlog, GTID, WAL, or agent-based pipelines
  • Strong production Kubernetes experience with resource management, autoscaling, and sharp debugging skills for complex failure scenarios
  • Infrastructure-as-code and access management expertise across multiple environments (Terraform and Ansible preferred; Pulumi, Helm, or mature configuration management also valued), following strict least-privilege IAM principles. GCP experience preferred, or transferable AWS/Azure knowledge
  • Production-grade Python and SQL capabilities with a cost-conscious approach to query performance, scanning volume, and data pruning
  • Ability to thrive in a low-process, Kanban-driven environment where senior engineers self-organize, rotate weekly triage duties, and prefer automation over manual repetition
  • Fluent English (C1 level) and comfort working in an international team environment
  • Optional skills or interest in: object-oriented design, data modeling/dbt, data warehouse architecture, orchestration frameworks (Airflow, Dagster), stream processing (Beam, Flink, Spark), or internal automation tools
