About This Opportunity

We are representing a prestigious French engineering research institution seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Computer Science for a 12-month contract based in Saint-Étienne, France. Our client operates at the intersection of engineering, mathematics, computer science, and healthcare, developing cutting-edge solutions through modeling, simulation, artificial intelligence, and data science.

This position focuses on developing the scientific foundations for next-generation population digital twins in healthcare. You will work on advanced mathematical modeling, stochastic processes, and simulation techniques to create virtual patient cohorts capable of learning from real-world data and testing therapeutic scenarios.

Responsibilities

• Design and formalize mathematical and stochastic models of patient trajectories including Markov chains, multi-state models, Markov decision processes, Monte Carlo simulation, and hybrid approaches
• Develop Python prototypes of population digital twins capable of learning parameters from real data, generating virtual trajectories, and testing therapeutic or care management scenarios
• Propose methods for calibration, estimation, optimization, uncertainty quantification, and model validation; compare approaches using real-world cohort data, registries, and clinical datasets
• Contribute to scientific dissemination through publications, conferences, and software development
• Formalize transferable scientific components and report progress to the scientific project lead
• Bridge scientific problems with formal models and robust implementations in an interdisciplinary research environment

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• PhD (Bac+8) in applied mathematics, computer science, automatic control, operations research, industrial engineering, quantitative data science, or closely related field
• Strong foundation in probability, statistics, stochastic processes, optimization, modeling and simulation, and/or dynamical systems
• Advanced proficiency in scientific Python (NumPy, pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn or equivalent) with good software development practices, version control, and reproducibility
• Significant experience with at least one family of dynamic models: Markov/MDP, multi-state models, Monte Carlo, differential equations, state-space models, or discrete-event/multi-agent simulation
• Ability to integrate mathematical models with data: parameter estimation, calibration, sensitivity analysis, validation, and uncertainty quantification
• Scientific English proficiency (minimum B2, C1 appreciated) for writing papers and presenting work in international contexts
• Interest in healthcare applications

Valued Additional Skills:

• Experience with longitudinal data, healthcare data, cohorts, clinical trials, or real-world evidence
• Knowledge of simulation environments (AnyLogic, SimPy, MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent) and/or compiled languages (C++, Java)
• Publication track record in modeling, simulation, artificial intelligence, operations research, or digital health journals and conferences
