AI Engineer – FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer) – U.S. Federal Sector

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential data and AI platform organization in their search for an AI Engineer - Forward Deployed Engineer to support their U.S. Federal Sector clients. This customer-facing role combines deep technical AI expertise with strategic consulting to help federal agencies build and productionize cutting-edge AI applications.

Important Requirements: Due to federal contract requirements and client site access obligations, U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a U.S. government secret clearance are required. The position is based in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia metropolitan area and includes periodic on-site work and client collaboration. Candidates with an active Secret or higher clearance are strongly encouraged to apply.

This role can be performed remotely with occasional travel once every 4-8 weeks to see customers as needed.

Responsibilities

• Develop cutting-edge GenAI solutions incorporating the latest techniques to solve complex customer problems in federal environments
• Own production rollouts of consumer-facing and internal GenAI applications for government clients
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor to customers across various federal domains
• Present at industry conferences and establish yourself as a thought leader in the AI and data science community
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product and engineering teams to influence priorities and shape roadmap decisions
• Deploy production-grade machine learning solutions with focus on evaluation and optimization

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience building GenAI applications including RAG, multi-agent systems, Text2SQL, and fine-tuning with tools such as HuggingFace, LangChain, and DSPy
• Expertise deploying production-grade GenAI applications at scale
• Extensive hands-on industry data science experience leveraging pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, and similar tools
• Experience building production machine learning deployments on AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Research, or equivalent practical experience
• Strong ability to communicate and teach technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Passion for collaboration, continuous learning, and driving business value through AI
• Preferred: Experience with distributed data processing platforms and Apache Spark
• Willingness to travel periodically to customer sites
• Required: U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain Secret clearance

Pay

This position is a direct placement with our client. The client's expected salary range is $182,000 to $250,208 USD, based on experience, skills, clearance level, and location within the DMV area. Actual compensation packages may include annual performance bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
