About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential telecommunications research institution in Palaiseau, Île-de-France, France. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct a 12-month assessment of network security vulnerabilities in passive optical telecommunication infrastructure.
This position focuses on evaluating how Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) technology could potentially be used to monitor optical telecommunications networks, specifically Passive Optical Networks (PON). The research will contribute to cybersecurity auditing capabilities for deployed fiber-optic infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on distributed fiber-optic sensor systems and their application to telecommunications network security assessment
- Catalog and analyze different types of local optical network architectures currently deployed in telecommunications infrastructure
- Evaluate PON architectures including feeder fibers, passive couplers, CWDM and TDM transmission systems
- Identify potential access points for DAS measurements within existing network topologies
- Investigate methods to discriminate between different fibers after coupling points and analyze the influence of reflective elements
- Study power budget margins for DAS measurements across different network configurations
- Assess DAS measurement sensitivity as a function of fiber type and environmental conditions
- Design, specify, and prototype interface modules required for network vulnerability assessment
- Conduct testing on either operational networks (where access is granted) or laboratory test networks
- Supervise and mentor graduate students and interns working on related projects
- Publish research findings and contribute to the institution's academic reputation
What We're Looking For
- PhD in electrical engineering, optical communications, photonics, optical sensors, or a closely related field
- Strong theoretical and practical expertise in photonics and digital signal processing
- Solid programming skills for signal processing applications
- Knowledge of signal processing algorithms applied to communication systems or fiber-optic sensors, particularly coherent detection systems, is highly advantageous
- English proficiency required; French language skills are desirable
- Demonstrated interest in applied research and ability to work in multicultural environments
- Experience or comfort with mentoring students and managing project work
- Strong analytical and synthesis capabilities
- Excellent teamwork, communication, writing, and teaching skills
