Overview
We are representing a confidential aerospace technology organization supporting a major federal earth science program. Our client needs an Associate Software Engineer to join their distributed Agile team working on large-scale scientific data discovery and metadata systems. You'll build full-stack tools that help researchers and students access critical environmental datasets. This role is remote with quarterly travel to the Mid-Atlantic region.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the complete software development lifecycle including user story creation, design, development, automated testing, and production support
- Build and deploy features for cloud-based search and data management platforms serving the scientific community
- Develop front-end interfaces and back-end services in a modern microservices architecture
- Lead deployment of product updates and identify production issues in distributed systems
- Contribute new feature ideas based on evolving end-user needs
- Share knowledge and industry best practices to help the team grow
- Recommend process and tooling improvements to increase team efficiency
- Collaborate in Agile ceremonies and sprint planning (quarterly on-site sessions required)
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Engineering, or related field
- 0–3 years of software development experience
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred): EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, API Gateway
- Proficiency in TypeScript, JavaScript (Node.js/React), and Python
- Working knowledge of Elasticsearch for search and data operations
- Strong foundation in Agile/Scrum practices and tools such as Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket
- Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development lifecycle practices
Desired:
- Familiarity with geospatial data formats and tools (GeoJSON, KML, mapping libraries)
- Exposure to machine learning or AI concepts
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Knowledge of monitoring platforms like CloudWatch, Datadog, or Prometheus
- Strong debugging skills in large-scale distributed environments
- Prior speaking experience at technical conferences or leading internal knowledge sessions
