Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer (All Genders)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defense technology client in Berlin who is building next-generation autonomous platforms for contested operational environments. Our talent team is seeking a Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer to solve critical challenges in directional wireless communication for highly dynamic tactical networks.

This is a rare opportunity to work on real-world autonomous systems where your networking protocols will operate on physical hardware in demanding conditions, not just simulations.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement MAC protocols and routing algorithms for directional multi-node systems, addressing neighbor discovery challenges under narrow-beam conditions
• Build dynamic TDMA schedules and beam coordination mechanisms integrated with physical layer and antenna steering systems
• Develop resilient multi-hop relay capabilities sustaining high-bandwidth video and control links between mobile platforms over tactical distances
• Create and maintain multi-node Hardware-in-the-Loop testbeds with automated logging pipelines to evaluate network join times and topology behaviors
• Bridge theoretical signal processing with real-world hardware execution, taking direct ownership of critical software and firmware modules

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Proven track record designing and shipping mesh networking protocols in commercial or defense products—simulation-only experience does not qualify
• Deep practical expertise with the Linux networking stack at kernel and packet levels, including strong live-debugging skills on embedded systems
• Strong understanding of wireless propagation and physical layer realities
• Hands-on experience designing medium-access control schemes or TDMA schedulers
• Radio-literate with demonstrated ability to design MAC schemes grounded in real-time RF characteristics

Preferred experience:

• Active contributions to open-source routing protocols such as batman-adv, olsrd, or Babel
• Professional background at tactical mesh vendors
• Experience with mmWave backhaul systems or technologies where directional beamforming is the default operational mode
