AWS Data Engineer (Senior) (Freelancer)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AWS modernization consultancy in their search for a senior-level AWS Data Engineer on a freelance basis. This is a remote, project-based role focused on data platform modernization engagements where production delivery and cutover timelines matter.

Our client works with organizations whose data modernization efforts have stalled—legacy pipelines that teams don't trust, warehouses underutilized, and initiatives that produced documentation instead of working systems. You'll join delivery teams that ship production infrastructure in weeks, not quarters, handling the engineering decisions that require senior judgment while automation handles repetitive discovery and validation work.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain production data pipelines on Amazon EMR and Amazon Glue
• Design data models and querying architecture for Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, Amazon Athena, and Presto
• Build and maintain pipeline orchestration using Airflow
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and architect solutions
• Troubleshoot and optimize pipelines and data models to ensure stability under production load
• Develop and maintain PySpark and SQL scripts for ETL processes
• Document technical decisions and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Evaluate emerging AWS data technologies and assess their relevance to client systems

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with PySpark and SQL
• 2+ years building and maintaining data pipelines using Amazon EMR or Amazon Glue
• 2+ years of data modeling and end-user querying experience with Amazon Redshift or Snowflake, Amazon Athena, and Presto
• 1+ years building and maintaining pipeline orchestration with Airflow
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively within a team

Preferred:

• AWS Data Analytics Specialty Certification
• Experience with Agile development methodology
