This full-time position on our Interim Housing team combines culinary skills with a commitment to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. Working at our Los Angeles location, you'll be responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering meals that contribute to a welcoming, home-like atmosphere. Operating in a professional kitchen environment, you'll coordinate with case management and support staff to ensure guests receive three daily meals plus snacks and beverages throughout their stay.
What You'll Do
- Plan and execute large-volume food preparation using various cooking techniques including roasting, sautéing, baking, and steaming
- Follow established recipes and production guidelines to create consistent, appetizing meals
- Coordinate meal timing to ensure food reaches service at the correct temperature and optimal appearance
- Operate commercial kitchen equipment—including electric, gas, and steam-powered units—safely and effectively
- Work the tray line and portable steam table to serve meals in the dining area
- Maintain strict sanitation standards and infection control procedures throughout food preparation, storage, and service
- Manage food inventory, including receiving, labeling, rotating, and safely disposing of perishable and non-perishable items
- Support therapeutic meal planning as outlined by kitchen leadership
- Oversee meal preparation when the Head Cook or Lead Cook are unavailable
- Adhere to departmental cleaning schedules and sanitation protocols
- Contribute to a structured, welcoming dining environment for all residents
What We're Looking For
- Current Food Handling Certificate or the ability to obtain one
- One year of paid culinary or food service experience (preferred)
- Willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid certification (paid for by PATH)
- Ability to work flexible schedules including evenings and weekends
- Valid driver's license with reliable transportation and proof of insurance (driving is required for this role)
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to sanitation and food safety
- Collaborative approach to working with kitchen and support staff
- Adaptability and initiative in a fast-paced kitchen setting
Position Details
This is a full-time, non-exempt position in Los Angeles, CA. Schedule options include Tuesday through Saturday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM or 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM, as well as Sunday through Wednesday and Saturday, 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM. Compensation ranges from $21.71 to $26.36 per hour, based on experience and qualifications. Pay is distributed in 24 installments throughout the year. The higher end of the salary range is available to candidates with substantial culinary experience. Background screening, drug screening, current TB test results, and employment eligibility verification are required before start date.
