Clinical Director, Clinical Research, Ophthalmology

Merck is seeking a Clinical Director to lead clinical research initiatives in ophthalmology in Tumwater, Thurston County. In this principal scientist role, you will direct the clinical research strategy and execution for our ophthalmology medicines, guiding development from preclinical through post-licensure stages.

About the Role

The Clinical Director for Clinical Research is a senior scientific leadership position within our ophthalmology therapeutic area. You will oversee the strategic direction and management of clinical research programs for both new developmental medicines and currently marketed ophthalmology products, ensuring scientific excellence and regulatory compliance throughout all development phases.

What You'll Do

• Design, plan, and direct clinical research programs for new and established ophthalmology medications
• Manage clinical development activities across all phases: preclinical, investigational, commercialized, and post-market
• Build, lead, and mentor cross-functional clinical research teams including regulatory, safety, and scientific specialists
• Develop and implement clinical trial protocols that meet regulatory standards and ICH-GCP guidelines
• Analyze and interpret clinical data to inform decisions on program advancement and strategic direction
• Collaborate with regulatory affairs on FDA submissions, health authority interactions, and compliance matters
• Monitor competitive landscape and emerging clinical evidence in ophthalmology therapeutics
• Serve as clinical science expert for internal stakeholders and external partner organizations

What We're Looking For

• Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent) in medicine, pharmacy, or biomedical sciences
• Proven experience directing clinical research programs or medical affairs functions
• Deep expertise in ophthalmology clinical development, pharmacology, or therapeutic innovation
• Strong understanding of drug development regulations, FDA guidance, ICH standards, and GCP compliance
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop scientific teams
• Strategic and analytical mindset with strong problem-solving capabilities
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
