Working Student (m/f/d)​Indexing Platform

About This Opportunity

Our talent team at Get A Job.ai is representing a confidential financial technology organization in Berlin. They are seeking a Working Student to join their indexing platform engineering team. This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute production code to a high-performance calculation engine that processes live market data streams.

As a working student, you will write real Java and Python code alongside senior engineers who will review your work and mentor you. This role offers genuine backend engineering experience with concurrent systems, microservices, and production-grade testing—not just feature tickets or theoretical exercises.

Responsibilities

• Implement features and fixes in the Java-based calculation platform, including improvements to calculation components, price stream consumption, and output production
• Write unit, integration, and performance tests, with particular attention to concurrent code paths where ordering and timing are critical
• Investigate correctness and performance issues: reproduce problems, narrow down root causes, and propose solutions under senior guidance
• Build and maintain Python integrations for internal teams, including connectors, output adapters, validation checks, and operational tools
• Contribute to monitoring and developer tooling that improves observability and makes system behaviour easier to understand
• Participate in design and code reviews, ask questions actively, and document learnings for future team members

What We're Looking For

• Currently enrolled in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field
• Strong Java fundamentals: object-oriented design, collections, generics, and ability to read and write idiomatic modern Java
• Solid computer science foundation in data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis
• Working understanding of multithreading and concurrency concepts: threads, synchronisation, memory visibility, race conditions, and deadlocks
• Willingness to learn Python for integration and tooling work (prior experience not required)
• Familiarity with Git, command-line tools, and testing practices; interest in performance measurement over guesswork
• Ability to work independently on scoped tasks, ask for help proactively when needed, and communicate clearly in writing
• Available for 15–20 hours per week during the semester, with flexibility for more hours during semester breaks
• Interest in financial markets, market data, or index calculation is welcome but not required
