Support Engineer Firewall & Netzwerk (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential managed IT services organization seeking a Support Engineer specializing in firewall and network infrastructure. In this role, you will develop targeted expertise in network security rather than serving as a general IT technician. You'll work across multiple client environments, gaining diverse hands-on experience with different vendors and configurations.

Your day-to-day responsibilities include:

• Handling and resolving network and firewall-related incidents and requests via phone, email, and ticketing systems
• Configuring and managing firewalls including rule sets, NAT, and VPN configurations (technologies include Sophos Firewall and Fortinet FortiGate)
• Administering network components such as switches and access points (Ubiquiti UniFi, Fortinet, Sophos)
• Setting up and supporting site-to-site and client VPN connections
• Analyzing network issues involving DNS, DHCP, VLAN, and routing alongside client teams
• Documenting configurations, changes, and solutions thoroughly
• Serving as technical escalation point for the service desk on network and firewall topics
• Collaborating with senior support engineers on complex issues and projects
• Working within defined processes and quality standards

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Completed IT training (such as IT specialist for system integration) or equivalent practical experience
• Professional experience in IT support, service desk, or system administration
• Fundamental understanding of networking concepts: TCP/IP, VLAN, routing, DNS, DHCP
• Initial hands-on experience with firewalls (Sophos or Fortinet) and/or network components (such as Ubiquiti UniFi)
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows client operating systems
• Enthusiasm for analyzing technical problems and interest in specializing in network and security
• Service-oriented mindset with customer focus
• Independent and structured working approach
• Excellent German language skills and good English proficiency

Advantageous experience:

• Background in managed service provider (MSP) environments
• Familiarity with Sophos Central, FortiManager/FortiAnalyzer, or UniFi Network Controller
• Vendor certifications such as Sophos Certified Engineer, Fortinet NSE 4, or Cisco CCNA
• Basic knowledge of Windows Server environments, Active Directory, or Microsoft 365
• Exposure to virtualization platforms (Hyper-V or VMware)
• ITIL knowledge or relevant certifications
• Valid driver's license (Class B)
