Senior AI Search engineer(m/f/x)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading composable commerce platform provider seeking a Senior AI Search Engineer to join their Discovery Team in München. Our client is at the forefront of product discovery technology, building retrieval systems that power some of the world's most demanding commerce brands.

This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the Munich office.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will build and evolve the search infrastructure that enables modern product discovery experiences. Search is evolving rapidly—customers now use natural language queries, and AI agents are increasingly the consumers of search APIs alongside human shoppers.

• Design and implement advanced search functionalities within a multi-tenant PaaS ecommerce backend built in Scala
• Develop semantic and hybrid retrieval capabilities that scale across enterprise-level product catalogs
• Optimize query performance, cost efficiency, and relevance from query understanding through to vector indexing
• Analyze user requirements and evaluate technical approaches to complex search challenges
• Test and validate software components for usability, functionality, and performance
• Collaborate closely with Product Management and DevOps teams
• Participate in on-call rotations supporting production systems as part of a globally distributed team

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer with a focus on search engineering
• Proven experience building search solutions on top of engines such as Elasticsearch (preferred), Solr, OpenSearch, or similar platforms
• Strong commitment to continuous learning and staying current with emerging technologies and concepts
• Fluent English communication skills for effective collaboration in international teams
• Genuine curiosity about leveraging AI tools to enhance productivity and effectiveness in your work

Preferred experience:

• Hands-on work with modern search stacks and relevance optimization strategies including vector search, hybrid search, learning to rank, and re-ranking techniques
• Development of REST APIs and understanding of scalable event-driven architectures (queues, notification topics, sharding, replication, load balancing, failover)
• Functional programming experience, particularly with Scala or similar languages
• Infrastructure work with technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust
