Senior AI Search engineer(m/f/x)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a Senior AI Search Engineer to join their product discovery team in Berlin. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the office.

Our client is building next-generation search and retrieval systems for enterprise commerce platforms. As customer behavior shifts from keyword searches to natural language queries—and as AI agents increasingly interact with their APIs—they are scaling semantic and hybrid search capabilities to production. You will work across the full stack of modern search: query understanding, vector indexing, relevance optimization, and cost efficiency at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement search functionalities within a multi-tenant Scala backend serving enterprise commerce workloads
• Build and optimize retrieval layers including vector search, hybrid search strategies, and AI-driven query understanding
• Develop scalable, event-driven architectures that handle high-volume search traffic across distributed systems
• Analyze user needs and collaborate on technical approaches with product management and engineering teams
• Test and validate search components for usability, functionality, and performance at enterprise scale
• Participate in on-call rotations supporting production systems with a globally distributed team

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on search systems
• Hands-on experience building search solutions on top of Elasticsearch (preferred), Solr, OpenSearch, or similar engines
• Fluent English communication skills for international collaboration
• A commitment to continuous learning and staying current with emerging search and AI technologies
• Genuine curiosity about applying AI tools to improve search relevance and engineering workflows

Preferred:

• Experience with modern search techniques: vector search, hybrid search, learning-to-rank, and re-ranking strategies
• Background developing REST APIs and scalable event-driven architectures (queues, sharding, replication, load balancing)
• Proficiency in Scala or other functional programming languages
• Experience with infrastructure technologies such as Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust
