Staff Software Engineer – Secondary Driving System

General Motors is hiring a Staff Software Engineer – Secondary Driving System for our Embodied AI team in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County. About This Position

You'll join General Motors' Embodied AI organization as a Staff Software Engineer responsible for the Secondary Driving System—an independent perception, planning, and controls stack powering advanced driver assistance and automated driving capabilities. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering, giving you the chance to influence architecture decisions and drive innovation in autonomous vehicle technology at scale.

What You'll Do

• Design and develop core software components for perception, motion planning, and vehicle control within the Secondary Driving System
• Build and optimize machine learning models and algorithmic solutions for real-time autonomous decision-making
• Partner with robotics, simulation, and human-factors specialists to validate system performance and ensure safety and reliability
• Lead technical initiatives, establish best practices, and mentor software engineers on complex autonomous systems challenges
• Contribute to all stages of system development, from simulation and testing through real-world deployment validation

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or equivalent professional experience
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with proven expertise in autonomous systems, robotics, or real-time control
• Advanced proficiency in C++ or Python for production systems development
• Experience designing and implementing machine learning and optimization algorithms
• Background working with safety-critical, distributed, or high-performance computing systems
• Strong analytical and collaborative skills with ability to integrate hardware, software, and algorithmic requirements
