About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential edtech organization that is scaling its learning platform to serve a rapidly growing student population. Our client has built sophisticated web applications that power admissions, course delivery, grading, career coaching, and reporting for thousands of learners across hundreds of institutions.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll lead technical architecture, product direction, and team capacity across the full stack. This is a high-ownership role where you'll work directly with stakeholders to understand user needs, shape what gets built, and lead execution from concept to delivery. You'll move fluidly between infrastructure decisions and greenfield product work, with the autonomy to make consequential technical choices.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates in the United States, Canada, Europe, and LATAM.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and build web applications across Ruby on Rails, Sinatra/Padrino, and Django that directly support the platform's educational mission
  • Make critical technical decisions on infrastructure, data modeling, API design, and emerging technologies with full ownership of tradeoffs
  • Build new functionality to create sophisticated tools and extend platform capabilities to new learner populations
  • Reimagine and migrate core platform components to modernize the technology stack
  • Integrate AI/ML technology to support mastery-driven, adaptive learning experiences
  • Scale systems to support exponential growth in user base
  • Set code quality standards through reviews, architectural guidance, and constructive feedback
  • Write meaningful automated tests that address real edge cases
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and systemic issues proactively
  • Mentor engineers and elevate the technical capabilities of the team

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years with Ruby on Rails
  • Familiarity with Claude Code or similar AI development tools and related best practices
  • Systems-thinking orientation with consideration for scalability, maintainability, and failure modes
  • Strong PostgreSQL and database design skills, including complex queries, indexing strategies, and schema evolution
  • Working familiarity with the full web stack, from infrastructure to CSS
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical decisions in small, autonomous team environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders
  • Passion for education and creating positive impact

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education or edtech environments
  • Direct experience working with LLMs and generative AI in production
  • Familiarity with Docker, Ansible, and/or Terraform
  • Experience deploying on GCP
