Staff Data Scientist

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology client seeking a Staff Data Scientist to drive product impact through search engine optimization and machine learning initiatives. This is a fully remote position offering end-to-end ownership of complex data science projects in a privacy-first environment.

Our client operates at significant scale with a lean, empowered team structure where individual contributors take full ownership from scoping through production deployment. You'll work on high-impact problems including ranking optimization, lexical matching, document authority signals, and LLM applications—all within strict privacy constraints that demand creative problem-solving.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex search ranking and retrieval projects from initial scoping through production deployment with minimal oversight
• Develop and implement machine learning solutions that improve search quality, precision, and latency
• Design new ranking signals and features, including lexical-matching and authority scoring systems
• Expand evaluation frameworks to measure relevancy and surface ranking gaps
• Investigate and prototype LLM applications for feature generation and ranking improvements
• Write production-grade Python code for deployment in large-scale search infrastructure
• Mentor team members and provide technical guidance on complex data science challenges
• Collaborate with product teams to translate ambiguous problems into well-defined project roadmaps
• Surface actionable insights from privacy-compliant, necessarily sparse datasets

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 10+ years of experience in Data Science roles
• 2+ years at Staff, Principal, or Director level
• Proven track record leading high-complexity projects with minimal direction
• Hands-on experience deploying machine learning models to production environments
• Strong background in NLP solutions and AI-assisted development
• Production-grade coding skills in Python or comparable high-level language
• Advanced SQL capabilities and query optimization expertise
• Ability to develop strategies for ambiguous, complex problems and decompose them into executable projects
• Experience advising others on complex data science work
• Quantitative rigor and evidence-based decision-making approach

Preferred:

• Direct experience with search-specific projects (ranking, retrieval, or indexing) from concept to production
• Familiarity with large-scale search infrastructure platforms such as Vespa, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr

Work Requirements:

• Comfortable with video conference meetings on camera
• Available for approximately 40 hours per week with flexible scheduling
• Able to travel at least twice annually for company meetings (4-5 days each)
• Must pass background check as condition of employment
